End of an Era

Perhaps the last great food value in Las Vegas was essentially eliminated last month when the Golden Gate on Fremont Street raised the price on its 99-cent shrimp cocktails.

The cheap shrimp cocktail was a calling card for the casino going back to 1955 when it was first introduced at a cost of 50 cents. In 1991 the price was raised to 99 cents and last week it was raised again to $1.99—members of the casino’s players club can still get the 99-cent deal.

Mark Brandenburg, co-owner of the Golden Gate, said most customers are understanding, and see shrimp cocktail as an excellent value.

Brandenburg raised the price shortly after taking over the property in 1991 and did it again this year, making him the only person to ever raise it. He raised the price because of the increased cost of shrimp.

Golden Gate sells between 2,000 and 3,500 shrimp cocktails a day.
