Smoke Signals

Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong were one of the most popular comedy acts in the 1960s and ‘70s, due largely to their celebration of the counterculture lifestyle prevalent during that time.

The two were vocally supportive of smoking marijuana, and the drug was often the basis for many of their comedy routines. During their height of success, Cheech and Chong released a handful of comedy albums and made classic films like 1978’s Up in Smoke and 1983’s Still Smokin.

The duo eventually went their separate ways, both delving further into their acting careers. Marin and Chong reportedly had a somewhat tense relationship after they severed ties, but are now reuniting for a comedy tour called Cheech & Chong Light Up America. Perhaps a new generation of stoner comics can learn a few lessons from the masters of pot comedy.

Cheech & Chong perform at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort October 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $45, $60 and $75.
