Strip Punctuation
![]()
In the past month or so, Steve Wynn’s Encore property has been taking shape and something’s been bugging me. The Encore logo is now atop the new building and, well, it just looks like it’s missing something. I think it needs some punctuation.
No, really. The building next door, its virtual twin standing at a weird angle, is called Wynn. That’s “Wynn” and a period. That period is intentional and packed with meaning. It’s there to emphasize some sort of finality. It says, “This is the Wynn—period.”
Encore, then, ought to have some sort of punctuation, too, to show it’s part of the same thought or, perhaps, that it is the next thought. Maybe it should be “…Encore.” It would make better use of the ellipsis than Celine Dion did with “A New Day…” which never made any punctuatory (is that a word?) sense. Or maybe—and this would rock—it should say “Encore!” At least it would show they’re excited about it, y’know? Kind of like that exclamation point in Donn Arden’s Jubilee!
Oh, wait. Never mind.
I did get to ask Wynn about this recently; he told me I “overintellectualize” such things and reminded me that I was the one who noticed the font use on signage at the Wynn is the same as that at Bellagio. It’s odd being criticized by a man whose attention for detail is legendary.
