The “Showgirl” Should Go On… Project Runway !

The biggest piece of entertainment news last month was the splashy debut of Bette Midler’s wonderful new production at Caesars Palace, The Showgirl Must Go On. I got to see a preview 10 days before the rest of the press for a piece for USA Today and then I got to see it with the rest of the press on February 29. In the interim, a bunch of changes were made, and so I complained to Bette at a media meet-and-mingle at Rao’s after the February 29 show that they’d cut a cute video bit of Michael Kors from his role as Project Runway judge.

This led to a lengthy chat with the Divine Miss M about the show, of which she is a huge fan. Later, when I caught up with Bette’s choreographer, Toni Basil, I learned that Bette’s a good friend of Michael Kors. My companion, my friend Amy, then made the suggestion that someone ought to bend the ears of Kors’ and “Runway” brass to get them to come to Vegas in season five and design an outfit for Bette’s show! As Amy noted, the judges are frequently dismissing various designs as “too Vegas.” Well, if they can do professional female wrestlers, surely they can go right into the heart of the beast and do a real Vegas challenge. And the cross-promotional potential is ginormous, especially since Kors just opened his first Vegas boutique, at the Palazzo.
