Sometimes events force even customer service—a sacred cow in the gaming and hospitality industries—to take a back seat to more important issues. Such was the case when wildfires forced hundreds of thousands of people from their Southern California homes in October. Shortly after the fires reached disaster stage, Station Casinos announced it would be holding a drive to collect pet supplies at Red Rock Casino. On a warmer than usual late-October afternoon, Lauren Westerfield, slot marketing manager for Santa Fe Station, was volunteering in the parking lot, handing out buffet coupons to those who brought donations, and helping organize the growing piles of cages and kennels, and boxes of leashes, collars and food bowls. “Station Casinos is using their name to get the word out and do some good for these people,” she said. “I’m glad I could be here to help.” Throughout the day on Wednesday and Thursday, various Station team members donated their time and energy to another important issue to the gaming industry: community service. Because of the efforts of all the volunteers, including Westerfield, and Station Casinos Vice President Staci Columbo, some 200 animal cages and kennels, 3,000 pounds of dog and cat food, 40 dog beds, 20 boxes of leashes and collars, and $3,000 in cash donations were send to Noah’s Wish, a non-profit disaster response and recover service aiding the animal victims of the California wildfires.
