No charges for fire

Clark County Fire Chief Steve Smith said no charges will be filed in connection to the January 25 fire at the Monte Carlo.

Workers with Union Erectors LLC were performing welding work on the roof when the fire started. The workers did not have the proper permit for the work they were performing, but Smith said the blaze was an “isolated incident where there was a negative outcome.”

Smith said the contractor and MGM Mirage were punished enough by the damage that resulted from the fire. He added that he wants the fire to serve as an example of why it is necessary to get the appropriate permits.

The fire cost MGM Mirage $100 million in damages.

If the workers had procured the required hot work permit for the work they were doing, they would have also been instructed on the procedures designed to prevent fires like the one that swept across the south-facing facade of the Monte Carlo.
