Vol. 4, No. 2, February 2008, Tumbling Dice
A sure Bette
With all the hype surrounding Bette Midler’s new two-year contract with Caesars Palace, the Divine Miss M cannot afford to be a miss with Las Vegas audiences.
But she has people wondering: why doesn’t she do press before the show? Is it superstitious anxiety? Or a scheme, perhaps, to pique our curiosity for the highly-anticipated, desperately needed, Celine Dion follow-up act? Celine Dion had a record-breaking, five-year, sold out show that played to literally millions of fans, and she began it at an unprecedented height of her career. So how will Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On fare in a climate of our post-breakup with Celine?
Bette has this to say: “Why Las Vegas? Why not Las Vegas!? I have been building to this for my whole life. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been hording feathers and fans and sequins and rhinestones for the last 50 years and, hey, I’m ready to throw ‘em all on stage.”
Certainly Caesars Palace is hoping for a success. As much as Celine was able to build on her fame through the regular production, she was also able to drive enormous amounts of traffic to the venerable Strip casino. While the unique arrangement between Caesars and Celine allowed her to control ticket sales—and, of course, proceeds derived them—Caesars was able to capitalize with package sales for rooms and restaurants. It was the proverbial win-win situation.
Caesars will get the chance to start evaluating the new production when it begins February 20.
