Sam’s Town has joined the growing list of Las Vegas casino properties to recently give their aging race and sports book a facelift. But the $20 million expansion has done more than add a handful of large-screen televisions and expand to ticket windows at for sports betters.

They did add a number of brilliantly clear plasma screens throughout the book—15 103-inch, 10 70-inch, 12 65-inch and—two 10-foot projection screens and 161 race carousels with 15-inch monitors, so there’s no shortage of screens, but the designation of the individual viewing stations as “race carousels” shows the direction Sam’s Town is taking its race and sports book.

Sports betting is big, particularly college and NFL football, but Sam’s Town Race and Sports Book Director Carol Boyd wants to make sure her dedicated race players don’t get left in the cold.

For example, while the monitors in the race carousels are capable of being used to watch sporting events, those channels have been blocked to keep the race bettors from being muscled out on sports-heavy weekends.

“Racing really carries the book from Monday through Friday,” she said. “I believe in catering to the race players and we designed the book to really accommodate both race and sports bettors.”

Players and ticket writers alike are happy with the new environment. The book at Sam’s Town hasn’t been touched since 1983.

“The one word everyone uses is, ‘impressive,’” Boyd said.

Part of the renovation including moving the book from its old location across from the poker room to its present location closer to the gaming pit inside the Nellis Boulevard entrance.

“When you look at the great race and sports books throughout town you see that they really put together a great visual package,” said Patrick Fitzgerald, director of marketing at Sam’s Town. “That’s what we’ve done here, between the plasma screens the LED board, the wood accents and just the overall décor. It’s a plush and comfortable environment.”

The new race and sports book at Sam’s Town opened October 17.
