California tribe OKs casino expansion

By Casino Connection Staff   Fri, Nov 02, 2007

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians last month unveiled plans for an $800 million
expansion of its casino resort, located near San Diego, California.

The project, scheduled to be completed by 2012, will include a new casino, hotel, conference center, restaurants, retail, a cinema, parking structure and a co-generation power plant. It will all be located next to the existing casino.

The expansion will be done under the terms of the compact that the tribe signed with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2004, which includes a requirement that the tribe negotiate some issues and mitigations with the county of San Diego.

The tribe has had a casino, now known as Viejas Casino & Turf Club, since 1991. It is considered one of the most successful casino resorts in the Golden State. Its success has given the tribe the financial resources to buy several radio stations, a bank, several RV parks, and to form an economic development firm that has allowed it to buy several hotels in Sacramento and Washington D.C. It has also used profits from gaming activities to pay for a fire department, education grants and to provide housing and health care.
