Political Blues
Depending on your perspective, Nevadans have either come to or lost their senses lately. Over the past 12 months, voter registration reports show the state, once Republican red, is now Democrat blue.
For the first time since 1992 registered Democrats outnumber Republicans.
Political scientists attribute the shift largely to the caucuses, which have attracted monthly visits from leading Democrats seeking their party’s nod to run for president.
“Right now is a good time to be a Democrat,” University of Nevada-Reno political scientist Eric Herzik said.
Herzik added that the Iraq war, numerous scandals in Washington and fiscal irresponsibility have both demoralized Republicans and unified Democrats.
Nevada’s Dems will likely see an additional advantage, allowing same-day registration for the January 19 caucuses, while the Republicans have instituted a December 20 deadline to register for their contest.
