Lahaina offers a break from traditional Las Vegas bars

Hang Ten
Many Las Vegas bars revel in the city’s rough and tumble, cowboys of the wild west image. Bull skulls and horns and 10-gallon hats adorn the walls, along with horseshoes, saddles, and black and white photographs of people who look like they stepped off the set of High Plains Drifter.

Lahaina Grill is hoping to take advantage of the conformity among other bars, through careful branding as a Hawaiian/Pacific Rim/Asian-themed business. The décor of evokes the tranquility of a pacific island vacation. Two aquatic murals peer through the rock-lined wall, the ceiling is lighted to resemble the nighttime stars, and lush vegetation surrounds the main dining area. At the bar, the cool blue of the pristine pacific waters is replicated through a soft but dark blue lighting.

The other thing that evokes island memories is the 24-hour sushi bar adjacent to the video poker bar. With the only 24-hour sushi bar in Las Vegas serving fish brought in fresh daily from California, Lahaina has generated a great following among those with a late night itch for fish. The kitchen is also open 24-hours, and in addition to the variety of seafood dishes offered, there are also pork, chicken and steak meals available.

Louis Huang, general manager at Lahaina, prides himself on maintaining a clean and comfortable bar. Like the mythical bar on Cheers, his has an atmosphere where everyone seems to know each other’s name.

Huang also prides himself in the specials he runs, including two happy hours—3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.—during which a large sake is only $3; ladies nights on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Lahaina also has private rooms available that accommodate up to 30 people for small events, and a larger banquet room that can hold as many as 200 people. The smaller, private room is great for small gatherings like birthday or office parties. The room features an X-box, karaoke machine, two flat-screen televisions, wrap-around couches and a large dining table.

There is also an outdoor courtyard, perfect for enjoying drinks under the night sky in summer, or during the day in the cooler months.

“Lahaina is upscale, and different from the local taverns,” Huang says. “It’s a place where you can come and just hang out. The food is excellent, the atmosphere relaxing and the servers friendly.”
