Brit Invasion
It was the year 2000 and a U.K. band called Coldplay released a quirky song titled “Yellow.” The accompanying music video featured lead singer Chris Martin earnestly lip-syncing the song’s lyrics while striding along a beach on a cloudy day. There was nothing particularly exciting about the band’s music or Martin himself, yet Coldplay’s simplicity held the key to their eventual superstardom.

Of course, now Coldplay is one of the most successful bands in the world, with Grammys and multi-platinum album sales to prove it. Chris Martin married A-list actress Gwyneth Paltrow, and their union produced two children and hit songs like “Fix You.”

But Coldplay’s music is still simple and earnest, even if their concerts now feature light shows and orchestras. A Rush of Blood to the Head’s “Green Eyes” and X & Y’s “Swallowed in the Sea” are perfect examples of the kind of music that provides Coldplay’s charm—sweet, honest and melodic alt-rock.

However, Coldplay is not an adventurous band, and their latest album, Viva la Vida, is more of the same. But charming, British and slightly melancholic form a winning combination, and Coldplay will likely continue to rule the (music) world.

Coldplay performs at the MGM Grand Garden Arena July 19 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $59.50, $79.50 and $99.50.
