They want you to want them

By Caitlin McGarry   Tue, Jul 08, 2008

Bored on a Friday night? Walk into any bar across the country and request “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Then sit back and watch as the room explodes with people screaming the lyrics to Journey’s mega-hit.

It’s a common sight these days. Though it seemed impossible a few years ago, it’s true: the ‘80s are cool again. Bangs, leggings and anything neon are beginning to epitomize the style du jour, so perhaps it’s only fitting that hair metal (also known as “arena rock”) should come back in fashion. And no band can better lead the retro revolution than Journey, a group whose smash singles melded pop melodies, guitar solos and soaring vocals with ease and perfection.

This summer, the ‘80s supergroup is joining with Heart and Cheap Trick for a rockin’ party of a tour. Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson will hopefully contribute a great selection of their past hits, like “What About Love?” and “Barracuda.” Ann’s fierce voice and Nancy’s quick guitar work are guaranteed to shake stadiums. Cheap Trick’s live performances have always been legendary, with the live version of “I Want You to Want Me” becoming their first hit single.

So put on your tightest jeans and embrace the rebirth of the ‘80s with open arms.

Journey performs with Heart and Cheap Trick at the Mandalay Bay Events Center July 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $57.65, $89.15 and $131.15.
