WSOP setting records

The 2008 World Series of Poker kicked off May 29, and already it is setting records.
The second event, the $1,500 no limit hold ‘em tournament attracted more than 3,500 entrants, the most players to enter any tournament event outside the WSOP Main Event.

“This is a great start,” said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the WSOP. “The sound of chips chirping throughout the Rio is a welcome return for all of us who love poker.

The bigger news this year is that the Main Event will not play to a conclusion in July, as it has done in years past. Instead, the highlight of the WSOP will play down to nine players, who will then recess until November.

The delay gives the WSOP time to advertise and market the event better, tournament officials said. It allows them to introduce the players to the public and build more anticipation for the event.

Purists say it takes away from the tournament by giving players time to study their opponents and improve their game through coaching. It takes removes the endurance element of the tournament, while also increasing the possibility of collusion, they say.
