Vol. 4, No. 8, August 2008
Canciones Hermosas
Mexican songstress Julieta Venegas is an icon in Spanish-speaking circles, kind of like Shakira was prior to the Colombian singer’s English-language crossover. Venegas has yet to reach out to English speakers, but her songs are universally lovely—no translation required.
Venegas has become a worldwide sensation due to her melding of traditional elements (an accordion is used frequently throughout her music) and alternative ones (like the occasional hip-hop beat and impish vocals). Even her album covers are strangely fascinating—Sí features the singer in a wedding gown biting a gloved finger, and 2006’s Limón y Sal depicts Venegas pointing a salt-covered hand to her cheek while holding a lemon half to her lips. Not your typical pop starlet, to be sure.
The singer’s voice, powerful but sweet, is best showcased on upbeat songs like “Lento,” during which she advises an eager lover to slow down before he loses her. The faster tempos mark a change for Venegas, who was far more serious on her first two albums.
Whether you already adore Venegas or have never heard of her, check out her stop on the El Presente Tour at the Hard Rock Hotel this month. You won’t be disappointed.
Julieta Venegas performs at The Joint August 8 at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $42 and $72.
