Disconnecting the Cell Phone Ban

Disconnecting the Cell Phone Ban
The Nevada Gaming Control Board voted last week to repeal an antiquated regulation prohibiting the use of cell phones in the state’s race and sports books.

The decision now goes to the Nevada Gaming Commission for a final ruling.

The prohibition was originally enacted to prevent illegal bookmakers from using casino lines to run their illicit operations.

With the spread of Internet sports betting and the number of websites that post updated lines, the regulation is useless today. Furthermore, regulators noted that there are additional regulations that ensure that illegal bookmakers can’t lay off wagers with casinos to balance their risk.

“Clearly, this a regulation that is antiquated and causes more problems than it is worth,” said Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander.
