Don’t Call It a Comeback
Hip-hop superstar Nas is hitting the streets with a controversial new album and the highly anticipated Jones Experience tour, alongside a comrade that few know but all should: Talib Kweli.

Nas and Kweli are linked by Jay-Z (who once called Nas an enemy and Kweli an inspiration) and their socially conscious, provocative lyrics that call to mind old-school hip-hop’s radical political leanings. Nas’s latest album cover and Kweli’s lyrical skills are perfect representations of the kind of confrontational and subversive methods necessary to challenge the status quo.

Kweli’s songwriting is particularly brilliant in its depictions of black struggles. From feminism (“For Women”) to poverty (“Eat to Live”) to the new faces of racism (“The Proud”), Kweli remains a consistent critic of contemporary America and its many deep-seated neuroses.

Nas, though more mainstream than his tour-mate, is just as contentious, both musically and personally. His marriage to singer Kelis has made headlines due to the couple’s outrageous antics, and his feud with Jay-Z was notorious until the two became friends and label-mates.

Fans and foes can hear both artists’ latest material when the Jones Experience tour travels through Las Vegas this month.

Nas and Talib Kweli perform at House of Blues August 8 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $37, $45 and $55.
