Vol. 4, No. 8, August 2008, Entertainment
King of Comedy
George Lopez is the kind of comedian who appeals to everyone, a rare feat for any public personality. Drawing from his Mexican-American roots, the L.A.-born Lopez has made a career out of talking about his early childhood experiences.
After years of doing stand-up (including several television specials), Lopez’s brand of family-friendly jokes landed him a TV sitcom, aptly titled George Lopez. The show mined Lopez’s formative years for its comedic gold, and was recognized as a milestone in countering the blatant whitewashing of family television.
Though the show was canceled in 2007 after six seasons, Lopez’s career has yet to falter. He has seemingly fully committed to a big-screen career, and has three movies set for release this year (including the bizarrely fantastic Beverly Hills Chihuahua). Lopez will also guest-star as the mayor of Reno on the Comedy Central show Reno 911! this season.
George Lopez appears at the Las Vegas Hilton August 1 and 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $66, $82.50 and $99.
