Rockin’ Idol

Rockin’ Idol
These days, simply appearing on American Idol offers a chance at becoming the Next Big Thing (see Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and country star Kellie Pickler).

Rocker Chris Daughtry reached the final four during the show’s fifth season, and many predicted his eventual win. In a surprising twist, he was voted off, sending Katharine McPhee to the final three. These days, McPhee is a distant memory and Daughtry is a consistent presence on Top 40 radio.

After leaving American Idol, Daughtry formed a band and hit the studio, crafting hits like “It’s Not Over” and “Home.” The North Carolina native’s voice is forceful, able to reach low notes and high ones with equal strength, as evidenced on the band’s handful of smash singles. Daughtry’s first album became a breakthrough success and remained in the Top 10 for months after its release.

Having paved the way for future rock-oriented American Idol finalists, like winner David Cook, Daughtry is now focused on ruling the airwaves without an Idol crown. After all, he doesn’t really need one.

Daughtry performs at Red Rock Casino August 15 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $62.50.
