Art Appreciation

Last month, Harrah’s Foundation unveiled 30 works of art created by students in Opportunity Village’s Art Enrichment Program.

Nine artists worked extensively with a fine arts instructor to create their pieces, which are now for sale through Harrah’s Foundation. The works are displayed in a long, beige hallway in the Harrah’s Entertainment corporate offices, located inside Caesars Palace.

Harrah’s spokesperson Jacqueline Peterson presented the art in a press viewing last month, and said the collaboration between Harrah’s Foundation and Opportunity Village, an organization that serves differently abled adults, is beneficial to the community.

“[The art] raises awareness not only about what organizations are out there in the community that need volunteers or that need support, but also lets them know that the Harrah’s Foundation has generously donated to this organization as well as many others,” Peterson said.

Harrah’s Foundation has long advocated giving back to the community. Last year, the foundation donated more than $40 million to dozens of organizations, including Meals on Wheels Association of America, Nevada Public Radio and UNLV Foundation.

The idea of using the long-standing partnership between Harrah’s Foundation and Opportunity Village to both decorate a drab wall and raise money for a good cause was the idea of a member of the Harrah’s team.

“Someone in our human resources department was tired of walking down the hallway and not having anything to see,” Peterson laughed.

Employees often stop to gawk at the artwork, and some have even purchased pieces. Many Harrah’s employees volunteer with Opportunity Village, and Peterson hopes the exhibit will remind people about Harrah’s Entertainment’s commitment to community service.

“This is a really unique way to raise visibility with our employees,” Peterson said.

Each painting is for sale, and half the proceeds go to Opportunity Village. The other half goes to the artist.
